Preserve Nevada was designed
for the unique situation in the state of Nevada. The centerpiece
of our organizational structure is the partnership between Preserve
Nevada and the UNLV
Public History Program.
Launched in the Fall
of 2000, the Public History
Program at UNLV is designed to introduce graduate students
to the theory and method of applied history. A combination of courses
and hands-on internships prepares students to take their valuable
skills out into the community to work in areas such as historic
preservation, oral history, archival management, and in museums,
libraries, and related fields. The partnership with Preserve Nevada
provides a unique opportunity for UNLV students to work directly
with preservationists, community leaders, and scholars striving
together to preserve Nevada's history and create a network of shared
interest in our geographically vast and culturally diverse state.
This partnership between a statewide preservation organization and
a state university system enables students to develop important
skills and establish a record of experience that they may take into
the market place while simultaneously creating a new pool of educated
preservation advocates in our state.
In addition to support
from the UNLV Department of History and College of Liberal Arts
Preserve Nevada received a $35,000 challenge grant from the National
Trust for Historic Preservation and the Richard
H. Driehaus Foundation with additional funding coming from the
Nevada State Historic Preservation Office
and individual donors.
